Joe was arguably one of Jazz’s last great innovators and, certainly, one of its premier composers of the 60s and 70s with famous hits such as Inner Urge and Recorda Me. As much of jazz followed Miles to the heralded “cool” school, Joe lead the way to a new sound full of fire and energy based on solid post-bop traditions. While Joe is not often associated with Jazz Education, many “happy campers” will remember him as a teacher and performer at the Aebersold workshops in the 1970s and 80s Summer Jazz Workshops.
