In book 1 “USE OF INTERVALS IN JAZZ LINES” I took a very conventional
approach in designing exercises using intervals and note groupings. All
the exercises used intervals progressing up or down in 4ths, 5ths, 3rds, and
chromatically. The purpose was to help one develop their ear to hear
these intervals and develop an understanding of the concept of how
intervals can be used in jazz lines. Now that you have accomplished this
task you are ready to take a more creative approach using note grouping
and the use of intervals.
When using intervals and note groupings one must be creative in
designing a jazz line that sounds harmonically and melodically exciting.
The line must not sound manufactured.
These elements do not have to be used in a sequential pattern. It is not
necessary to develop a specific sequence pattern of any kind. We can use
any size interval in any combination of note grouping. We can combine
various note groupings and intervals in a variety of different ways. I like
to think if it sounds right, it is right and if it sounds wrong it is wrong. At
the risk of being criticized, rules are made to be broken. When we do we
create new rules.
