Jazz Improv Magazine review by Joshua Musselwhite:
In-depth, complete, and extensive don't even begin to describe the information in "Intermediate Jazz Improvisation." With over 270 pages (over 400 when including the pdf pages), this is one of the most extensive study books I have seen on the market today. And since it is published by Jamey Aebersold, you know it has to come with play-a-long tracks.
The topics covered in this book include the following: chromatic scales, half-diminished and altered dominant chords, melodic connecting and major cadences, cycles, turnarounds and sequences, substitutions, and symmetrical scales. Before each explanation about the topic at hand, patterns and exercises are given to illustrate the concepts.
Once the patterns and theory (from the explanations) are learned, the student can flip to the second half of the book and apply the techniques to the sample jazz-standard tunes, included on the audio tracks. Additionally, here the student can study written solos that incorporate the various techniques which are very conveniently labeled, aiding the student's analysis.
This is an amazing book. With it's clear practice exercises and extensive essays, it will certainly assist in guiding any student along the right path.
